Dreaming of MEXICO…Again.

Mexico, May-Hee-Co, oh Mexico. You call me in your lovely Spanish accent!  How many times have I answered your call? Let me see…..I am counting 7, not including cruises.  Soon to be 8, and I can’t wait! You Know I LOVE HOTELS and Mexico has some of the best. They also have some of the best for the cheapest! (If you time it right) and, I am sad to say, that they have a few of the worst too. There are a lot of scams going in pretty much all of the caribbean and I will let you know how to avoid them. But Mexico has an overwhelming feeling of friendliness which makes it not only the easiest place to get to, but IMO, the best getaway that is sure to please. Also the best bang for the buck.

Side note: the worst place to deal with: it’s definitely The Dominican Republic: gorgeous, cheap, and great ONLY if you are in a well run hotel. They could take some tips from Mexico, where hospitality is important and the service is often executed w immense pride.

Living in Atlanta means that one of the best “Get away from it all” vacation destinations, Mexico, is under two hours away. The beaches are GORGEOUS, the ceviche is delish, the beer is cold, and relaxation is almost immediate. I’ve said many times that we tend to underestimate how incredible this option is because its so accessible. Well, next time you are there, just look around and see how many Europeans have made the trek to visit sunny, beautiful, friendly Mexico.

The first time I went to Mexico I went on the cheap…I mean real cheap! A girlfriend and I went, flight included, for 5 days, we spent under 700$ each to my first ever all-inclusive. We stayed in Cancun at the Oasis. I have to say that even though it wouldn’t meet my current standards, it was still really nice! The architecture was beautiful and Mayan influenced with what looked like a mini rainforest in their lobby.

The beach, well, it’s Cancun! There is a good reason that it became so popular: it’s literally a sliver of paradise! The water- everywhere you go in Cancun- is clear turquoise. The sand is light. It’s incredible.

So we are in this cheap all-inclusive and yet it has marble and stone everywhere. Our floors were marble. We joked and said what a romantic room it was for two girlfriends to share. 🙂image

We didn’t pay attention to a v crucial factor in planning a trip: timing! We happened to stay at the Oasis, Cancun during spring break. Yeech! Both of us were shocked to see the drunk 18 year olds everywhere, yet the beach and hotel were so inviting that we enjoyed our trip anyhow.

The food, well it wasn’t great and we did skip away to the downtown area of Cancun…which is quaint and charming…to get some real Mexican food. When we attempted to bring our leftovers into the hotel a security guard told us that we couldn’t bring “outside food” into the hotel! We actually hid our to-go bags in the bushes and went back down to get them later. Crazy.  We were pretty sick of the hotel food as I recall. Still, would I recommend this vacation to anyone who didn’t want to spend a lot and loves a nice hotel on a gorgeous beach? Absolutely!!!!
